Combining a pair of binoculars which has a digital camera can be a brilliant idea with endless possibilities, with useful applications from birdwatchers documenting their greatest "catches" to parents zooming in on their own kids for the playing field. Unfortunately, Bushnell’s Imageview digital binoculars, which integrate digital imaging right into a set of two 10x25 binoculars, could possibly be ahead of their time.
The image quality in the binoculars isn’t a problem, while they employ clear optics that enable sharp focusing in the fixed 10x zoom level. Build quality also is good, with thick rubber coating for the sides to make sure an excellent grip and fold-down rubber eyecups to support eyeglass wearers. The small 25mm objective lenses, however, don’t provide substantial light-gathering but do maintain your design as small and light as possible

The built-in camera will probably be the actual problem for the majority of users. It runs on the low-resolution CCD that snaps pictures in a fixed resolution of 640 x 480, that is fine for e-mail and not adequate to make prints. To make matters worse, most in the shots we took were grainy, with a large amount of compression artifacts and subpar color.

If you can live with those limitations, the digital camera does hold the great things about easy use and a lot of image-storaging capacity. With 8 MB of built-in memory, we snapped nearly 150 pictures before connecting the digital camera with a PC. No image preview is available, but a basic black-and-white LCD display on top of the camera lets you know the amount of pictures you’ve snapped as well as the selected mode.

With a much better digital camera and removable memory slots, this idea of the high-quality camera-binocular hybrid could realize its full potential. However, the image quality compromises imposed with the Imageview will probably be excessive for most to bear, regardless in the low price. --T. Byrl Baker
